Sandra Severt- Owner

How did you come to own Gloria's?

In 1989, Meade Balsimo who owned Gloria's with his wife, Gloria, after whom the store is named, called me and asked me if I would like to buy the store. I asked him how long I had to think about it. He said, "We sign the papers tomorrow".  I quit my job and signed the papers.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is the hunt for vintage jewelry.  I am always searching, even when I am on vacation.  I visit the local antique and coin shops hoping to find something wonderful.

What is your favorite customer story?

I had a customer who came in on Valentine's Day and purchased a 3 carat heart shaped diamond.  He wanted it set that day so he could present it to his fiancée that night.

I managed to find a crown, which is the piece of metal that holds the diamond.  Believe me, there are not many 3 carat heart shape diamonds out here, let alone crowns! I took it to the goldsmith who installed the crown and set the diamond that day.

My customer was delighted!

What is your favorite type of jewelry to sell/wear?

Vintage and antique jewelry are my passion.  This is why I love to wear and sell it.  Each piece is unique and no more will ever be made.  When you purchase a piece of antique jewelry you are not only purchasing a beautiful jewelry item, you are purchasing a small piece of history.

What are your favorite activities to do outside of the store?

My idea of Nirvana is sitting in the middle of the Mississippi River, north of Brainerd, watching the eagles on my jet-ski.  There is no one there, no houses, no people, no boats.  Just me, the jet-ski, and the eagles.

In addition, I like to ride my motorcycle trike, particularly on the back country roads.

I bleed purple. GO VIKES! I love my cats.  They are my purring psychologists.  They are always ready to lend furry ear.

What is the best advice you can give to a new customer?

When you are buying a diamond, buy it with your eye.  Don't worry about its pedigree, or whether it comes with certification.  The only person who has to love your diamond is you.  So, buy the one that speaks to you.

Carrie Plott - Owner

How did you come to be an owner of Gloria's Jewelry?

I first started in the jewelry industry as a teenager, helping my mother with bead stringing and silversmithing.  As years passed, I worked in almost every position in the jewelry trade. I have done everything from simple goldsmithing, to retail sales, design, buying, and so on.

I first met Sandy Severt in 1990.  She was the owner of Gloria's Jewelry, a small 800 square foot store, located across the street from our current location.  I was working at a different jewelry store at the time.  We did business together for many years, and developed not only a good business relationship, but a friendship.  She offered me part ownership in 1997.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is design.  My mother was an artist, so I was exposed to art and design at a young age. Design has been a big part of my life, and jewelry has always been my biggest inspiration.  I love getting inspired by certain stones, and seeing my vision come to life.  What is the most rewarding for me, is making a customer’s dreams a reality.

What is your favorite customer story?

One story seems to come to mind first.  A man who worked for the city sewer company stopped into the store one afternoon.  He casually tossed a ring across the counter to me and said, "I found this while I was working in the sewer.  I doubt it is anything."  It was a ring that was completely black, dirty, and looked like nothing special.  First things first, I cleaned it.  I was not about to handle something that had obviously spent a significant amount of time in a sewer without a proper cleaning! Then I examined the ring, and sure enough, it was a platinum antique ring with a beautiful 1 carat diamond in it. It dated back to 1915.  The man was stunned.  We made a deal that day, and everyone was happy.

What is your favorite type of jewelry to sell/wear?

My favorite type of jewelry to sell would be my custom designs.  I love seeing my vision from start to finish.  When a customer comes in and appreciates one of my designs it is a great feeling.

Antique and vintage jewelry is also a love of mine.  With my art background, I can really appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship in every piece.  It is not something I can just order over and over again.  It is one of a kind.  They have a charm that can never be reproduced.

What types of activities do you enjoy outside of the store?

I love travel, especially anywhere with great snorkeling.  I could spend all day in the water.  The sea life fascinates me.

I collect art glass, hand-blown modern, cameo glass, antique designer pieces, anything that strikes me.  I like going out and finding new piece to treasure.

I love Minnesota sports, especially hockey and football. I attend games often.

And of course, I love spending time with friends and family. Whether it be going out for a night on the town, or staying in watching movies, I just enjoy the quality time.

How did you come to work at Gloria's?

I started working at Gloria's, part time, after high school.  After about a year of employment, I was offered a full time position. I was given the opportunity to attend the Gemological Institute of America. I graduated in 2008 and since then I have worked at Gloria’s.

What is your favorite thing about working at Gloria’s?

There are several things I love about my job.  The number one thing I love about my job is the customers.  I get to be a small part of their best life experiences from engagements to weddings and anniversaries. I have seen customers welcome new family additions and celebrate birthdays.  It is so rewarding to be a part of those moments.  The second thing I love about my job is that I get to look at pretty things all day!

What is your favorite customer story?

I had the privilege to work with a soldier overseas in Iraq to create a custom engagement ring. He wanted to present it to his girlfriend the day he came back from deployment.  We worked over email for months to get it absolutely perfect.  Then we arranged to meet first before he joined his family and his girlfriend. He proposed the second he saw her. It was such a rewarding experience.  I was honored to be a part of something so special.

What is your favorite type of jewelry to wear/sell?

My answer is the same piece for both! My favorite type of jewelry to sell is engagement rings.  It is such a special time in a customer’s life.  Most often it is our customer’s first big jewelry purchase.  It means the world to me to be a part of such a grand milestone in people’s lives.

My engagement ring is my favorite piece to wear, as well. It was custom made and designed by my mother, Carrie Plott.  My ring has special meaning to me because the two people I love the most, my husband and my mother, created it together.

What types of activities do you enjoy outside of the store?

When I am not at the store, my favorite place to be is at the cabin.  I enjoy getting away from the cities and being on the lake. When the weather is nice, you’ll find me boating, four wheeling, relaxing, fishing, and swimming.

If I am not at the cabin, I am more than likely cheering on our Minnesota Wild or Vikings!

Cindy Nelson- Retail Sales

How did you come to work at Gloria's Jewelry?

I heard about the store from several friends and decided to go in one day and see what it was all about.  After my first visit, I quickly became a return customer.  The store has such a comfortable atmosphere.  Carrie, Sandy and Michelle were very personable, fun and easy to work with as a customer.  Overtime we all developed a friendship.  I was then lucky enough to be offered a position in sales, I cant call it a job because it doesn’t feel like work to me. The opportunity came at the perfect time in my life.  I was ready for a career change, and landed my dream job.  I love it here.  I love learning new things every day.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job would be the great conversations I have with the customers.  I love assisting them in finding that something special.  Most of the time, I am excited right along with them, as they find it!  It is so fascinating what people bring in during our buying events, and the stories behind their treasures.  Of course, the jewelry is beautiful, but it is the people that really make my job great.  We truly have the best customers.

What is your favorite type of jewelry to sell/wear?

My favorite type of jewelry would be the colored gemstones.  My favorite being the gemstones with a phenomenal trait, like color change.  For my 30th wedding anniversary, my husband went to Carrie to design a ring for me with the most beautiful color-changing Alexandrites, which I love.

What types of activities do you enjoy outside of the store?

When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband. We go on motorcycle rides and enjoy the scenery.  I like checking out new restaurants, especially Italian places.  On the weekends, I like to spend time with our children; if we are lucky enough to have them all together at once! I have my animal clan at home, who always keep me busy.  I have a cockatoo named Snow, and two Chihuahua dogs named Micko and Manuel.
